This is copied from my knitting blog, I wrote it June 10 2008. It was a Meme from Catbookmom.
What's the last book you read that you thought was really super, inspiring, you'd recommend it to most anyone?
Well, I don't read much anymore....there's a Reader's Digest and a Queen's Alumni magazine in the bathroom, LOL. I was really enthused with "Could it Be B12"....so much so that I wrote a long post about it here last year. Another book I recently 'read' was "Richistan" by Robert Frank, about 'new money' in the States. Okay, the only chapter I really read was the one on how wealth is affecting parenting, LOL. At the same time, I was also reading "The Simple Life" edited by Larry Roth. The funny thing---during this time, Oprah did her show on "Free-gans". I'm very big on voluntary frugalism. I hate seeing people live not only beyond their means, but beyond their needs. Sure, perhaps I don't need that whole yarn stash in the basement, LOL, but I've only bought a little yarn this year and some of that I've already used up! Another recent book was "The Children's Blizzard" (don't have the author info anymore). About a massive blizzard on Fri Jan 13, 1888 (or was it 1889?). The book went back in time and gave histories of the Nebraska/Dakota immigrants; their lives before emmigrating, their trips over, the years before the storm, and after. Also a lot of history on the US weather service.
What food totally grosses you out, you'd never be able to touch it? Ew. Gag. *hurl*
I don't do well with squishy. Or unusual. My family was always enthusiastic to try things like frogs, eels, small game.....I like fish pretty well, but don't like any seafood. Especially oyesters, clams, mussels, octopus.....that fleshy texture.....ick.
Is there a song that makes you dance every time you hear it? Would you tap you feet and sing along to it in public?
I'm definately a closet singer. And dance? Ha. However, Barbara listed Footloose. What's hilarious is that I was recently at Winner's (I think the US version is TJ Maxx), and Footloose came on the speakers. I saw two ladies, both older than me, dancing, and one of them was unabashedly singing! But then, in the purse section, were two younger ladies, and I overheard one say "I LOVE this song! It totally reminds me of "Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion"! LOL.
Tattoos: yes or no? Do you have any? Tell us! Do you think they're gross? TELL US.
I do not have any tattoos. I cannot think of anything that I want permanently penned on me, to follow me through the rest of my life. If I could come up with something representing music, or knitting, or Canada, I would do something small. But I don't know where. I don't think I'd want it visible to the public. It's almost becoming too trendy to have tats, and I'm feeling a little rebellious NOT having any!
Go through a stack or box of your old music. Stuff that you may not have heard in years. Pick one and tell us about it. Is it as good (or as bad) as you remember?
I do tend to listen to most of my music fairly frequently. I've REALLY slacked off in buying CDs though. I have quite a few that I keep only for a song or two, and I have a really ecclectic collection. One of my long-time favourites is Nanci Griffith "Little Love Affairs" but I'm also a big Mary Chapin Carpenter and Jann Arden fan. So much so, that I tried to get Rob on board with naming Megan "Arden". LOL. I love almost all my CDs, and even if I'm not a big fan of most of the album, I just can't part with any. They almost all have some sort of emotional attachment; the ones that don't do get parted with.
There, I did more than 3 questions. I don't know who to tag, because I'm slow on this one, and we all read the same blogs, LOL. So, if you haven't answered some personal questions in awhile, go to it!

Funny Kids!
Originally posted on my knitting blog, December 4, 2006
Lucy has been full of hysterical sayings lately (when she's not being hysterical, that is. Hysterical as in screaming mad, not ha-ha funny). Grandma and Grandad with the Pear Trees were coming to babysit them last Friday (oh-Grandma--when we say bed at 7:30, there's a reason, LOL). Both Huey and Lucy thought we were going out to have another baby!! And last week, I took them to the Bulk Barn. I never take them anymore as the trip before had been so horrible. But I had put it off and ran out of time. We were checking out and Lucy wanted just about every sticker pack on the rack. I said I couldn't get them right then so I'd have to send Daddy back. The cashier thought that was a great 'lie'. Hee Hee. Works a lot!
When we went to Bancroft the weekend before, we listened to "Kids Are Worth It" by Barbara Coloroso on tape. The kids played, slept, ate, etc. We didn't think they were paying much attention, but occasionally Huey would laugh at something on the tape. But then...in Bulk Barn, Lucy asked for something. I was distracted, she already picked her one treat, so I said "No." She says "But on the tape, she said I'm supposed to convince you!" LOL!!! (Referring to the section about how to avoid saying "No" by saying things like "Convince me" or "It's a no now, but if you can wait, it might become a yes once I think about it".)
And last night the MOST hysterical thing. Lucy's JK/SK class is singing in the Christmas concert. She's been practicing the songs, "Nuttin' For Christmas", "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" and Jingle Bells. But last night she started singing something else which I recognized as "Merry Christmas/War is Over" by John Lennon.
"So this is Christmas/And what have you done/Another year over/And a new one just begun..." And Lucy goes on... "And so this is Christmas/For weak and for strong/For the witch and the poor ones...and the witch is the ugly one with the poison apple from Snow White".
I nearly fell off my chair!

Stupid Husband Questions
Again, an old post from my knitting blog, but this never gets old :)
Comebacks for stupid Husband questions
Comebacks for stupid Husband questions
He said . . .. I don't know why you wear a bra; you've got nothing to put in it.
She said .. . You wear pants don't you?
He said .. . .Shall we try swapping positions tonight?
She said . . That's a good idea - you stand by the ironing board while I sit on the sofa.
He said . . .. What have you been doing with all the grocery money I gave you?
She said . Turn sideways and look in the mirror!
On a wall in a ladies room . .. "My husband follows me everywhere"
Written just below it . . " I do not"
Q.How many honest, intelligent, caring men in the world does it take to do the dishes?
A.Both of them.
Q.How does a man show that he is planning for the future?
A.He buys two cases of beer.
Q.What is the difference between men and government bonds?
A.The bonds mature.
Q. How many men does it take to change a roll of toilet paper?
A.We don't know; it has never happened.
Q.What do you call a woman who knows where her husband is every night?
A. A widow.
Q.Why are married women heavier than single women?
A.Single women come home, see what's in the fridge and go to bed. Married women come home, see what's in bed and go to the fridge.
Man says to God: "God, why did you make woman so beautiful?" God says: "So you would love her." But God," the man says, "why did you make her so dumb?" God says: "So she would love you."

More Oldies

I Killed the Ducky
For Lucy's birthday, I got her a lot of little things. One was a "Grow Your Own Ducky". I thought it was like those little pills with the sponge shape in it, that you throw in the bath and the pill dissolves and the sponge grows. This wasn't in a pill, but you put it in water, and over 3 days it grows. That's a long 3 days for kids. The water was getting a little gross looking on the second day, so I thought the ducky would like some fresh water. I don't recall anywhere on the package it saying "Don't use hot water". Right before our eyes I killed the duck. The orange bits are his bill, the rest of him was a bright yellow. Sad, but funny.
We have two local (Orangeville, Ontario) papers, and one of them prints two great columns each week. One by folk/children's entertainer Eric Nagler who happens to live up here, and the other by Gordon Kirkland who lives out west. This week Mr. Kirkland did another installment of his recent experience with selling his condo and moving. But this paragraph made me laugh:
As I have said many times before, I know that no matter what, the meager fact that I am the husband in this relationship means that Diane will always have a logical reason for doing absolutely anything. Any doubts that I might have about the rationale will be wrong, because if a man speaks in the forest of a marital relationship and there is no one there to hear him, he is still wrong.
Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.
Tonight is Rob's company Christmas Party. They used to big elaborate affairs, with hired entertainment and goofy things that no one really cared about (except for thinking how they would have rather had a larger bonus, than fake papparazzi pretending to take guests pictures when you entered). I used to take all week to get ready. Do the toenails, the fingernails, a facial, shop for a dress/shoes, tweeze the brows...This year...well, I did my hair on Tuesday night and my brows on Wednesday. On Wednesday night in bed, Rob asked me what I was planning to wear (I didn't go last year, and there wasn't one the year before, so it's been a while). I said "I don't know." He got worried, LOL. So this morning I tried on everything I own and decided on the Burgundy dress I have worn for many events in the past 8 years. It fits again :) I've really got my $35 out of that purchase, LOL. Sometimes you CAN be frugal and cheap at the same time.

Flashback
And because she's just so darn cute:
She helped herself to the leftover pizza in the fridge! And this is Meggie with her Grandpa (my Dad).
This giant bear was from Grandma and Granddad with the Pear Trees for Megan's birthday. I know she looks a little frightened here, but she really loves it now. She loves most stuffed animals, but hasn't had one for her own until now. It takes up about a third of her crib. Then I realized she could easily climb out (or, more likely, fall out) on top of it.
Oh, speaking of falling...last night Megan fell into Lucy's bath. Fresh jammies and diaper on of course. It's never when she actually needs a bath, LOL.
This was originally posted on my knitting blog, Nov 28, 2006. Meg had just turned one, Lucy was 4, and Hugh was 6. Ahhh. The good old days...

To Each Their Own
This was originally published in 2006 on my knitting blog, but now that I have a non-knitting blog, it's better suited to here!
I'm in a Yahoo parenting group, called "Slightly Crunchy Attachment Parenting" and there seems to be a lot of Mormons and ex-Mormons. Someone (not necessarily a Mormon, but I think likely), posted a link for the latest in swimwear (this was early in the summer). It was tongue in cheek, but it is definitely a real business! I particularly love the 'slimming suit'. It's important to be modest and not show much skin....but we must look as slender as possible while showing nothing! Quick, go take a look! I'm sure we'll have a few weeks of summer sometime again :)
This summer (2013) we were planning a trip to a water park, outside Ottawa, Ontario (our nation's capital!). I noticed on the website that "burkini's" were allowed on some slides. I had an idea what a burkini was, but since they're not at all bikini's, why play on that word?
I'm looking at my list of labels to add to this post....do I add the religion label? Since these swimwear requirements are due to religion, I guess so!

Lucy in the Sky with Scissors
Originally posted on my knitting blog, August 30, 2006
This is the Jane of the Jungle bikini from www.knitty.com. I added a lot of short rows to get the bottom to cover the curvature of her behind, especially with a diaper on, LOL.
But take note of the beautiful long, curly, blonde hair. Oh so darling. A total pain to comb, but oh so cute!

I don't know how well you can see it...an interesting, asymmetrical shag...Lucy decided in Feb. to cut her own hair. While I was in the shower. Normally, Huey the Policeman would have come upstairs and yelled. I asked him why he didn't..."This is my favourite show and I didn't want to miss it". We were about to head out to meet Huey's occupational therapist, there was nothing I could do at that moment. We went later that day to get it 'evened out'. Sob.
This was April 2006, about two months after the haircut.
Nope. Not good enough. She got her kid scissors and scalped herself again! Right above one ear, underneath at least, but no cute ponytails for the first day of school next week :(

For a long while we had been planning, and talking to Lucy about, to donate her hair to Locks of Love--a charity that makes wigs for kids with cancer. We kept saying, "After school starts", "After Christmas" "After New Year's".... It had just gotten long enough to donate, without looking like she'd cut all her hair off. I hadn't chosen a place/time to do it, but it WAS going to happen.
Until I walked into the basement and saw the heap of hair on the little table... I had to leave the room I was so upset. I called Rob at work even! After we got back from the OT, I collected a wavy section and taped it together, and bagged up the rest. She had cut it right down to the scalp underneath at the left back. The hairdresser was shocked, but the end result was cute. Unfortunately, dressed in Huey's hand-me-down winter coat, she looked like (and got called) a boy, a LOT. Then early in the summer, we went back to get it evened out some more, and she put too many layers. It's cute, but boyish. It was starting to grow out and we had finally done ponytails again.
June 2006, 4 months post hair cut.
Yesterday, Lucy made a paper crown and wanted to tape it to her head. But her hair was in the way. I trimmed her bangs, and around the face and thought that'd make her happy.

Wacky Wednesday
I think I'm going to start a new theme for Wednesday. Wacky Wednesday. Cause I sure had a wacky moment earlier today.
I've been walking to my job as a lunch supervisor. One stretch is along a major road, and goes through some green space behind a Catholic high school. There is a creek through this green space, and I have sometimes encountered teens coming out of the bushes with interesting fragrances wafting behind them.
Today, I was walking along this stretch, on the sidewalk, crossing over the creek. Grooving along to Jann Arden, no one else in sight (except the traffic). All of a sudden, I get accosted by the strong scent of pot!
Every time I cross this bridge, I think of the song from "Dora the Explorer": "There's a grumpy old troll, living under the bridge...". Not this time, LOL. I don't think he could be grumpy today!!

Wet
Ever see someone doing something and you just have to watch because it's mesmerizing to see someone so naturally gifted at something?
I was at Meg's swimming this morning, and I went upstairs to watch, like usual. During her lesson time, there's also lane swimming. There's usually only one or two women there, but today, it was busy, and my eyes were immediately drawn to a man doing laps. It's rare to see a man there, but this man must have been born in the water. He was so smooth and even and it looked effortless. He wasn't going fast, just a steady front crawl. He was obviously in excellent shape. I did notice that he wasn't using his legs much, but thought maybe he was focusing on his awesome arms. Then when he got down towards my end again and did that crazy little flip thing "real" swimmers do, I noticed something blue and white bobbing/around his legs. I didn't notice it while he was swimming at first. I couldn't help but watch him swim a few laps; the difference between him and the lappers was enormous (especially compared to the men and women in the slow lane doing the breast stroke....that's got to be the least sexy stroke, LOL).
Then, I noticed something. He was missing his lower left leg! The blue and white floaty thing was giving him extra buoyancy I guess. It didn't matter, I was impressed when I first saw him. I've always wanted to be a better swimmer, and I thought I might do laps while Meg did her lesson, but I'm both inspired by him, and reluctant to look like a dork. LOL.
I saw him after we came out, with a pretty wife and two well behaved small kids and a cute little Mini. Some people are just naturally blessed! Have you ever seen someone like this? I also felt this way during the Jason McCoy concert and watching his McCoy Monday Minute videso on YouTube. Doesn't hurt that both these men are easy on the eyes :)

Things That Make Me Go Mmmmm?
I finally got around to signing Meg up for swimming lessons since we moved back here. It's a fairly "new" facility, popular with young families (despite the lack of a family change room). There is a "parent and tot" class before Meg's and one during her class. I've noticed that a lot of the new moms (the babies have to be 6 months old) are quite slender, compared to the new moms I've seen in Orangeville. Maybe cause there's way more fitness/health opportunities here. Anyway, many of the moms of the older kids are quite slender too. But of course, not all.
For week 5, parents are invited to get in the pool with their child. I thought this was a cool idea; we never had that in O'ville. But what surprised me? The skinny moms stayed on deck and the fluffy moms got in the pool. Fascinating.
The other thing I've noticed? The strollers. OMG. It's crazy! Those babies, as I said, are 6+months, yet many of them come in, in the carseat in the stroller. It's surprising, since the parking lot is not big, and they have to wait for a small elevator. Not only that, but strollers are allowed on the pool deck (you have to go through the showers to get on deck, there's no way to stay dry!). Some of these siblings of swimmers spend an hour (or more) in their carseats and/or stroller. Some are bundled up for the outside weather. It's not surprising that many of them are cranky! And the ones that aren't cranky have a zoned-out look. There is one toddler that is allowed to roam the deck, and he is the most happy, bubbly child there. Co-incidence?

Absorbant Minds
(How can I change the background colour of the typing area? Not what shows once it's posted, but right now, the background is dark grey and I can't see the cursor).
Back at Christmas Meg was having a lot of trouble with getting to sleep. Most nights she stayed up on the couch with me, while I watched TV. I chose shows that were okay to watch while she was there, but hopefully, not too engaging....like Dr. Oz. What 5 year is going to watch, and absorb, Dr. Oz at 11:30pm?
Meg. That's who.
Last night I was cleaning her toilet with some cheap children's shampoo. She asked why I was using that shampoo. I said cause it was cheap and not a good shampoo. She says "Yeah, Dr. Oz says not to use watery type shampoo, you need to use creamy shampoos".
She can remember THAT, but not to not stand on the arm of the couch?!

She's Funny!!
Every so often, one gets a little bored with the blogging world. You know...you look at your list of favourites, and you feel you've gotten all you can from them, that another post would just be a repeat of what you've read before. You realize that half of your knitting blog list rarely even talks about knitting, that your list of 'healthy' blogs just makes you feel guilty, that you spend way too much time reading things that just don't inspire you, or aren't really your area of interest anymore....
Recently, I was trying to find some more machine knitting blogs, and some how came across one...through comments on other blogs, or links, or something. Anyway, she had commented on my knitting blog a couple times, and one day I couldn't remember which of my many recently added favourites was her's, so I clicked her name on my comments and looked at her profile. I found her knitting blog, and under "other blogs" there was one with an interesting title "Breakfast at IHOP". What? LOL. I had to check it out. The first post I read had me laughing my head off (it is a little difficult to read against the background, and the lack of paragraphing, but it's worth it!!). I went back to read a bit more of the blog....just take that link, click on the header which will bring the blog back to the whole blog, instead of the one post, and then scroll down to her post "Don't Bug Me"----I'm using my new laptop and highlighting is tricky to me).
She talks about telemarketers, and how she likes to play with them. Oh, she's clever! I was thinking about the things I say to telemarketers. Our first house was only 3 years old when we moved in. We frequently got calls for replacing windows, doors, shingles, etc. I'd say that I'd never buy from a company that doesn't do it's market research, because they're wasting their money with the telemarketing, so obviously their prices have to reflect that. If Rob answered, he'd give them the address of the new school across the street and say, come for an estimate. Later, when we moved to an older house, I had to get more clever. I'd say anything. "We don't have carpets/just got hardwood....etc". Calls about duct cleaning were fun..."we don't have central heat" was good, but one day, I was in a strange mood, and I can't believe what came out of my mouth "when they seem dusty I send our little furry dog through the ducts on a long leash. He does a great job!". LOL! The last window call was similar "We have no windows. We live in a earthen dome".
Charities are touchy though. Often staffed by volunteers, I don't want to upset them. "No, I can't afford to take my kids to the circus....so no, I can't sponsor someone else's kids--how can I get my kids on the list?". "I've used my charitable donation for the year already" (works well in September onwards, but not so well in January). "I don't respond to charities/retailers/services that cold call". I'd like to hear your come back lines for charity calls!
Once, Rob answered a call and he actually was interested in the service/product, but couldn't understand a word of the heavily accented speaker. He told them they should invest in employees that can speak English well enough for English people to understand, if they wanted business. A few minutes later, someone with better English phoned him back! But he was still hard to understand, and we just don't "respond to cold calls". He also gets frustrated when he answers and the caller can't pronounce our last name...it's an instant red flag and he doesn't usually let them go further. (I've lost my mouse pointer....argh...a ha! While wiping off the dog hair I touched the touchpad lock button!)
Once, I got a call from a water testing company. I said no, they went on, I said we're educated enough to know if our water needs testing and we'll find our own company....the caller responded that obviously I was not educated. I hung up. A few minutes later, "someone" calls back and utters a few mean sounding things and hangs up! Did I get crank called by a telemarketer?

Lucy-isms
Lucy is an interesting girl. Very bright and precocious, she lacks common sense sometimes, but her cuteness saves her.

1) Lego Set (any Lego set would be fine)
Although her name is Lucy (and was named after our last dog's sister), we usually call her Lu, or Lu Lu (or YoYo...). It's fascinating though, that she looks SO much like her Aunt Lou!
(Not the best picture to show the resemblance, but I can't find the other ones!).
I love having the kids come home for lunch, for many reasons:
Hugh walks in the front door and says "It helps you walk on top of the snow".
Lucy followed him in the door (rare) and replies "But what if you're carrying a dead horse?"
Huh?
Lucy's class is studying pioneers, like all good grade 3 classes in Ontario since before I was even in grade 3. They were going to have a project where the teacher assigns the kids a "pioneer job" and they have to do a report. Lucy's first choice of jobs: banker.
Last year, Lucy made a Christmas Wish List:
1) Lego Set (any Lego set would be fine)
2) Laptop
3) $200 or $250
4) A magic wand
5) A table for my room
6) My own house (just a little house)
7) Lots of candy
8) a driver's licence (a car for my drivers license)
9) an electric guitar
10) A band (a place to rock out)
11) Sana's autograph
12) A TV for my room
She did get a couple things on the list...but not her own house.
A few years ago, I found a pair of RipZone snowboarding pants at the Salvation Army. They were a little big for Huey, but the price was great. After a while, we noticed a jingling sound. There appeared to be some coins stuck between layers of the pants. One day recently Lucy borrowed the pants. During recess, she tried to figure out what coins were in there, based on sound and size. She decided on a Toonie and a penny. Her friend says "Lucy, you know your money too well!"
(Not the best picture to show the resemblance, but I can't find the other ones!).Thursday, July 10, 2008

THis is a portion of the Mother's Day 'card' Lucy made for me (I'm still getting used to the scanner--it looked like the whole picture had scanned). It's me, wearing Megan! What you can't see is my transparent yellow skirt, LOL. Lucy's drawings really remind me of the "Rugrats" or other current cartoons. Mmmm....perhaps there's a reason, LOL.

What They Doo....
Ever wonder what the stuffed animals and toys do when you're not home? I swear, this photo was NOT set up; it's exactly as I found them when we came home from strawberry picking!

Life With Meg!
About two months ago Meg radically changed her sleep habits. No more (regular, predictable) naps. Later nights as well! How is it that the most active child is also the one who sleeps the least?
Lets look at today. The girls played Play Dough. It's one of the FEW things Meg will play with for more than five minutes. But, it's messy, although not an issue. Later, they wanted to paint. So, I said, let me vacuum up the Play Dough, then you can paint. While I'm vacuuming, I hear the kids screaming. I stop. Meg is on top of the microwave, trying to get the paint out of the top cupboards. I get her down, the keep vacuuming. I go to move the plug, and see that she spilled the box that holds all the little playing pieces for games. I ignore that as I hear another ruckus in the kitchen. Meg is back on the chair, heading for the microwave, but has peed her pants. I clean that up, then vacuum again. I turn around, and she is pouring herself water from the fridge dispenser. Caught that potential disaster in time and sent her off. Get the table scrubbed and go to get the paints. Huey yells that Meg has my MP3 player that has been plugged into the computer. I rescue that, get the paints out. She paints for less time than I have been typing (and I am a touch typist), all the while Lucy is screeching at her because she's not doing it right. I got the TV on Huey's channel after kicking him off here, and now he's saying Meg won't let him watch TV and I'm not letting him do anything fun. All this in under 20 minutes.
Sigh. Fun, like, behead and slice the two baskets of strawberries in the fridge that he and Lucy insisted we pick? Fun, like, clean up from lunch? Fun, like, fold all the laundry I couldn't fold while I had to sit out front watching the girls play and scream at each other? Fun Fun Fun!!! Only 8 1/2 more weeks to go! Please pardon me if I'm not posting too often or I sound a little frazzled or worn out, LOL. While it's nice to not have to go to the school three times a day, there are trade offs! But, I am determined that this will be a FUN summer, and I will NOT let three kids and the house defeat me!
But please, check in on me occasionally if I've been a little quiet. LOL.

Question of the Day
How come I can fit into a size 10/medium pant, but for 'control undergarments' I need an XL?!
I don't know why the comment function was de-activated, but it is back now :)
